Vol. 12: An emotional intelligence newsletter for the sensitive community (sent bi-weekly to all subscribers).
How are you feeling?
Take a minute to use the emotion wheel to check in with yourself.
âDoing those deeply unfashionable thingsâslowing down, letting your spare time expand, getting enough sleep, restingâis a radical act now, but it is essential.â
- Katherine May, author of Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times
Let's not live in the past or obsess over the future. The present moment is the only certainty.
Feeling worried? stuck? confused? lost?
Itâs not uncommon, in moments of uncertainty and discomfort, to find ourselves living in the past or obsessing over the future.
Sometimes, the present moment can be too:
Overwhelming
Unbearable
Uncomfortable
Hurtful
But hereâs the thing ...
The present moment is our only truth; the only certainty.
And itâs the only moment in time when change occurs. Even if we donât feel it or see it.
No matter how youâre feeling right now, change is constant energy moving you forward.
As change moves us, we can live freely in the present moment and move with intention â something weâre unable to do if weâre stuck in the past or focused on the future.
With intention comes movement. Movement forward without fear. Movement away from what no longer serves us.
In the present, you might not be where you want to be, but you can find comfort in knowing you are moving.
But only if youâre here. Not there.
If you feel like âitâs too late,â tell yourself:
I am here.
When you feel overwhelmed by the future, tell yourself:
I am here.
When the present feels uncomfortable, tell yourself:
I am here. But not for long.
Living in the past will leave you feeling discouraged. Living in the future will cause overwhelm.
But no matter how you feel in the present moment, know, with certainty, it will pass.
Use the present moment to observe. Get curious in how youâre feeling. Remember that negative feelings are just as essential as positive feelings.
Every emotion tells us a story of who we are and your story never stop writing itself.

Is there a negative emotion youâve been carrying with you? Use the emotion wheel to label it and take the time to write why you might be feeling this way. Identify any small changes you can make now, so you can slowly let go of what no longer serves you.

+ Bonus Discussion with Christine Best-Messino
Letâs face it, if energy was money, HSPs would be poor.
The truth is, HSPs tend to be bad at âbudgeting.â
If we think about what it truly means to manage and regulate deep emotions, itâs really about how we choose to distribute our energy.
When it comes to feeling deeply, scarcity isnât the problem. Itâs what weâre giving our energy to thatâs causing us to feel depleted.
In the latest episode of Valid Feelings, learn why energy is an âemotional currencyâ and how HSPs can be get better at spending it.
Plus, hear what a professional hair stylist (and extroverted HSP!) has to say about âemotional labor.â
